Years ago, while freelancing, my editor told me how she once had a column in the local newspaper entitled “About Anything” where she’d write about whatever she wanted.
She went to the grocery store and talked about the new planters out front, about the best seasoning you could buy down the street that works for both chicken and beef, how to patch a hole in the wall, or where to get the best Thai food in town. Anything that caught her attention, ended up in her column.
That’s when it struck me. This is exactly what I want to do—write about anything and everything. Whatever it is, a new vacuum cleaner that works great on the stairs, how to regrow celery in your windowsill, or why pencils are your friends and pens are your teachers, I just wanted to go, write, blend, deal with the now, and bring everything I’ve learned along the way with me.
Life throws us curve balls. Right when you’re settled and comfy, a do over of some sort that was waiting around the corner pounces. And then everything changes and you are never the same. You don’t start over though, you continue. It’s going from one thing to the next, bringing everything you’ve learned, done, and experienced with you and combining it with all you are learning and doing now.
About Anything & Everything has been a small seed in my mind’s incubator that for years has been waiting to sprout—ever since that moment when my editor told me about her column.
Just add water and the seed starts to grow. It’s that simple. And then, you are on your way to new adventures that you were made for.
Oh, and the Friends Fish Magnets! I almost forgot. They were one of those curve balls that changed everything for me after one Nordstrom fashion show and then a letter I sent to the set decorator on the TV Show Friends. There’s more to the story, find it here where I write about Anything & Everything . . .
