ARTISTIC STATEMENT

I have always been drawn to the abstract. Others may see a vase, a flower, or a pear, but I see these objects as shapes, angles, lines, and oftentimes exaggerated in stark ways to the point of being nearly unrecognizable, but not quite. I love using colors in new and unexpected ways. Every piece starts with an intent, but as I go I find the painting takes over,

leading me in new directions and then I end up somewhere else entirely. My current work celebrates common household objects and décor like vases, flowers, fruit, glasses, even words that are represented in the abstract and paired with shapes and lines to add more depth. I work in acrylic paints, gouache, ink, colored pencils, linocuts, and more. The world is my subject matter “oyster,” whatever it is I see that inspires me is where I go. At times I’m surprised, myself, at what catches my eye such as the way tools are arranged on a weather-worn wood shelf at an estate sale garage or graffiti on the side a truck, who knows. Inspiration can be found everywhere.
